How To Export Chrome Bookmarks [2024]

Afternoon everyone, hope this new week is treating you well?

I recently had a client ask me a fairly simple question, ‘How To Export Chrome Bookmarks?‘. But for some reason they just couple follow the documentation that Google and other websites have put out there. So I wanted to put my own spin on this to help them and others understand.

Before we start, I’ve also put this post on Medium in case you prefer reading over there!

Introduction

So, you need to export your Google Chrome bookmarks? Then this is the post for you!

I’ll show you how to export your Chrome bookmarks so that you can import them again. This used to be a very useful process a couple years ago, in the days where if you reset your system without doing this then all your bookmarks would be lost forever. But in recent years, being signed into your Google account in Chrome negates having to do this.

As mentioned above, being signed in the Google Chrome means that your bookmarks and other settings are automatically backed up and synced to your other devices. Meaning manually export and importing your bookmarks is practically a thing of the past.

Even most web browsers today, will automatically import bookmarks from another browser when they open for the first time. Making this a very automatic and user friendly process.

Enough of the fluff, lets get into it. Follow the steps below:

Open Google Chrome -> Click the ‘…’ icon in the top right corner -> Go to Bookmarks -> Click Bookmark Manager -> Click the ‘…’ at the top right corner again -> Export bookmarks

After this, you will be prompted to chose a location to save your bookmarks to

It’s literally as easy as that, but the client was just struggling soooo much that I had to connect in and I even made custom documentation for them in future.

I’ll include a screenshot of this below, but A LOT of information has to be redacted for security reasons:

Notes

From the above section, you might have also seen the option to Import Bookmarks from the same location that we exported our bookmarks. This is the method for manually importing bookmarks into your Google Chrome browser. I’m not going to do another section for that however, as it’s basically the same as the process above but in reverse.

It’s also worth noting that when you import bookmarks, it won’t replace your existing bookmarks and you can even chose a new folder to import them into.

Conclusion

You’ll find that this process is similar if not the exact same for other web browsers too, for example Microsoft Edge which is basically a complete clone of Google Chrome.

Hopefully, you managed to get something from this post. As I’ve mentioned a couple of times, my client needed a little more information and I’m more than happy to share that with everyone else. The documentation I mean, not the client and their lack of tech abilities…

Enjoy! 🎉
